Photo by MeWhat we saw last night was historic, plain and simple. The Magnetic Fields play their first show in years in front of a tiny room with a 250-person capacity. Those in attendance received an incredibly rare and unique concert experience. The intimacy of the Iron Horse is unmatched by any other venue I've been to. The atmosphere is also quaint and cozy. On the recording, you can hear the scuffling of feet against the dry wooden floorboards as well the creaking of the attendee's rickety old wooden chairs. This is the ONLY way to see the Magnetic Fields live. My girlfriend Kim and friend Matt, and I were able to score a table in the absolute front row on the floor. We were so close that whispers between the band members could be heard by us. All of the combined charms of the band and venue left me speechless and aching for more.

I'm looking to get into concert taping myself. I already have an audio restoration and mastering studio at home but I don't have the gear for recording on location yet. I've rented stuff in the past but I'm looking to have some stuff of my own. I see you and a lot of other tapers use binaural mics with either a dummy head or their own ears as mounts. I've recorded choirs at Christian youth camps in the past and my rigs were much less portable. Typically it was:
-A Mackie 1402 VLZ Pro mixer
-A R0DE NT4 stereo mic
-2 Shure SM57's (one for the piano and one for the narrator)
-Either an HHB CDR830 CD recording deck or a Zoom H4 SD card recorder
So, I figure if I want to tape a show at a club or bar (which is where most of the bands I see play) I'm going to need something much more inconspicuous. If I could get away with it, I'd just use the pres on the H4 but I doubt they have very good pres or A/D converters on them. I'm thinking if I wanted to splurge, I'd get an Apogee MiniME and a pair of R0DE NT5s on a stereo bar and run it in via S/PDIF to something like an Edirol R-9 and run the entire thing off the batteries on each component because I think the MiniME is battery powered.
